We interrupt this blog hiatus to wonder how in the Hell someone like Ron Paul could get this close to winning the Iowa caucuses. WTF?

Thanks Andy. Been on hiatus from the blog for awhile, but this Paul thing is crazy. The willful ignorance of his supporters is rivaled only by that of the Obama folks.

Yeah, sort of a giggle out of me, but he is still the best candidate that this country has seen in decades

Capitan, what country are you referring to? Iran?

Ron Paul: Because if the Constitution needs updating, please use the process the Constitution actually lays out for updating it, and quit shoving everything into the Commerce and General Welfare clauses.

I don't think too many conservatives will disagree with you there Steve, but we're not just electing a Constitutional scholar, we're electing a LEADER. Yes, the Constitution lays out the basic foundation of our government, but it's not intended to deliniate the full scope of government's (or our leader's) responsibilities. Ron Paul keeps making it sound like he thinks perhaps it does, and he doesn't seem willing to LEAD the nation in a morally correct direction, he seems content to let the chips fall where they may.
You overdosed on drugs I legalized? Oh well, not my problem.
Your people and homeland got vaporized by Iran's nukes? Oh well, not my problem.
You made a mockery out of the intitution of marriage, one of the bedrock principles of society going back for milennia? Oh well, not my problem.
You are being invaded by a rogue nation and your people are threatened with genocide? Oh well, not my problem.
Ron Paul is the moral equivalent of the guy who stands there in a You Tube video watching some woman get her face stomped in by a thug. I don't think that's what America should be. I know that's not what Reagan was like.
"Mr. Gorbachev, this wall is none of our business."
He's not a LEADER, he's a crumudgeon with his principles stuck so far up his ass he can't think straight anymore.

fucking "A" right woody. and I would say hes not all that principled as he would have people beleive.
he was going to vote against going to war against afghanistan after 911 and changed his mind after his whole congressional staff threatened to revolt and resign in mass so he changed his mind. he knew it would spell the end as a congressman and he didnt want that personal power gravy train to screech to a halt.
he's a one note nincompoop loony jackass.

UHH Woody,
I believe that as far as the Federal Government is concerned, the constitution does lay out their responsibilities and their authority. It is called the 10th amendment.
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
The first part of leading is being a man of your word. If you do not want to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution do not take the job. Fight to change the constitution to something you can uphold.
When we let our "leaders" not follow the constitution because we agree with their goals you need to be prepared for the president who does not follow the constitution and does not agree with your goals.

Your confusing POWERS with LEADERSHIP Tad. Reagan wasn't granted authority in the Constitution to declare the Soviet Union morally bankrupt before the world stage, but he did it anyways, he was LEADING. The Constitution is the foundation, but it's not the entirety of the Presidency. We need someone who brings their good leadership and moral judgement to the office, not someone who doesn't care about anything not specifically covered by the Constitution.
There is such a thing as right and wrong, but Paul seems blind to the concept.

Woody,
I believe your attitude is the systemic problem with America. We look for "leaders" instead of demanding representatives. There is not one politician in Washington that I know or trust well enough to lead me anywhere. I will elect men of good character and report to represent my state in federal matters and in the case of the president, in matters of foreign affairs also.
When you decide you need a leader, you have decided you do not know where you should be going and you need someone to point the way.
Isn't Obama leading you? He said that our medical system is morally bankrupt and he will lead us to a better system. He is a leader. Look at all the people following him. I would rather not trade one pied piper for another who is just as willing to usurp authority that we have not given them.

We HAVE representatives Tad! It's called CONGRESS! The President is supposed to offer leadership, that's why it's called the EXECUTIVE branch. What you describe is NOT our system of government.
You also prove my point Mr. Booth. Lincoln freeing the slaves = a usurper, not a leader.
Times like this REQUIRE a leader, not a simple concensus. You think the Israelites voted to leave Egypt? No, they were led out by someone with a vision.
We need bold changes in Washington, and a stong and steady hand on foreign affairs. Ron Paul offers one, but not the other. He can be Santorum's Treasury Secretary, but not our President.

So the constitution means nothing as long as the person is leading?
Why wouldn't it be leadership to get an amendment to the constitution to address the racial inequalities? His type of leadership almost cost us our republic.
Remember, to almost half the country Obama seems like a leader and they wish he would ignore the constitution even more.
Also, Reagan did not violate the constitution by telling Gorbi to tear down the wall so it is possible to be a leader and work within the framework of the constitution.
Tad
p.s. - I totally agree with you last sentence - let's hope RS can gain some traction.
